Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
