A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
