Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.
