The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
