Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to challenge particular decisions from the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
